THE MATERIAL
A Moutonmouton begins with a sheepskin.
Not with a colour, a trend or a predefined pattern — but with the natural character of the material itself.
We work exclusively with natural European sheepskins, carefully selected for their softness, texture, colour and individuality.
Each skin is vegetable tanned using natural tannins, never dyed and never chemically treated.
The natural lanolin remains in the wool, allowing the sheepskin to retain its inherent qualities and its natural resistance to moisture, dirt and fading.
From by-product to interior object.
The sheepskins we use come from sheep raised for meat. Their hides are a by-product of the food industry.
At Moutonmouton, we give this material a new purpose — transforming it into a handmade sheepskin rug, designed to become part of an interior for many years.
Nothing is artificially made to look the same. The variations in colour, texture, length and density of the wool are part of what makes every piece unique.
MADE SLOWLY, BY HAND
Once the skins have been selected, the composition begins.
Each Moutonmouton is individually composed, considering the natural shapes, tones and textures of the skins.
They are then carefully cut and hand-sewn, stitch by stitch. No industrial production. No two pieces are exactly alike.
It is a slow process, guided by the material and by the eye of the maker.
The quality of the skins is essential.
But so is the composition — the balance between individual pieces and the way a rug relates to the architecture and interior around it.
BESPOKE RUGS
Moutonmouton creates both original designs and bespoke sheepskin rugs, made specifically for a particular space.
Dimensions, shape, colour and composition can be developed together with the client, creating a rug that feels naturally connected to its surroundings.
For those who wish to create their own piece, the Moutonmouton atelier holds an extensive selection of natural sheepskins. Together,
we can select the skins and compose a rug that is entirely personal.
CARE
A Moutonmouton is made to be lived with.
For everyday care, simply vacuum regularly, as you would any other rug.
The natural properties of the wool make it naturally resistant to everyday dirt and moisture.
